i've been thinking about how best to use this blog. so what i decided is that tutorials for things i want to make will be listed in the links at right. then after i make something and post about it, i will include the link in my post. that way i can keep putting up new tutorials as i find them! i think this will help me find what i want and give you new sites to check out!

so i found the fabric i think i am going to use for my apron! the theme of the swap is spring, and this material just looks like spring to me! you know, when things are still sort of grey, but then little peeks of flowers and budding leaves start showing up. i am still deciding on a pattern, but i am leaning towards a full apron because that's what i myself prefer. the only thing is, the print looks better running horizontal. i also need a contrast fabric for the pocket, and maybe the ties too. should i go red, green, or white? help!

i also bought some gutermann thread to try, i've heard it's great. most of my thread was inherited from my mom & grandma, and i've found some of it breaks easily. right now it's all in a big box, waiting to be put in some sort of order. i just can't decide how i want to organize all of my craft stuff. i had it pretty much conquered in a closet at our old house. but then the movers dumped it all into packing boxes, and now i have to start over. but that's a good opportunity to take inventory and destash a bit too!

new stuff

my fantastic husband gave me 24 hours in KC by myself this weekend - which meant i was able to shop many places i never go anymore. you know, thrift stores and craft stores, places where taking three children is almost impossible. i had so much fun! i bought some really cute fabrics and some notions and things i needed for my mobile project. so i am excited to get started, and i will keep you posted on my progress. the hardest part is deciding what to do first!

goal oriented

i've always wanted to make a quilt. for years, i have been collecting fabrics and photos of quilts that i like, intending to someday make one for myself.
in 2004 i started blogging. 2005 was when i decided to finally learn to knit - and i did. 2006 was the year i said "i will learn to make pie" and i did it - & now i think my pies are quite delish. so, maybe, 2008 will be the year i finally tackle quilting! although i've also been thinking about taking on bread...

oh yeah, 2007 - i sorta skipped that year. moving and a surprise pregnancy kind of took up all my time. but i could always say it was a sabbatical.

new friends

aren't they sweet? they love teatime.

last night i was rifling through the mess that is our guest/craft/stuff everything you can into it room, and i came across yet another unfinished project!

i came across this partially completed set at a thrift store about 2 years ago, and i had to take them home. the original pattern simplicity 7744 (1976) was for stuffed toys, but whoever began this was also making a crib quilt too. the pieces are cut, some are appliqued onto squares, and some of the toys were sewed and embroidered but not finished. they just got lost in the shuffle. i took them out last night and stuffed three of them, and i just need to finish the rest sometime. and i noticed that the elephant needs a tail, and kitty needs a bow collar.

the swaps are on!

i just got my swap partner for the mobile swap - yay, so excited! she seems like someone i would be friends with, we actually share a lot of interests and get this - she works with books all day. what a coincidence, since in my premommy life, i was a librarian. i am shopping this weekend for some items i need to start working on it. i will post some pics once i get started!

i haven't been given my partner for the apron swap, but my name is listed, so hopefully soon. so if you are lurking, trying to find out a little about me, please check out my other blogs too!

i write about my family life at misadventuresinmommyhood
and i showcase my cakes at decadencecakes

i am thrilled to be a part of these fun swaps. thanks to both the organizers!

color me happy!

i just love how this came out! it's so fun and springy and girly. it's my first time using rickrack that i can remember. although, my memory isn't what it once was.(thanks, college!) but anyways, i made two of them this afternoon, and one will be gifted this weekend. emma already grabbed the other one. here's the link for the excellent tutorial.

and yes - more projects to come using up the rest of this bright fabric! geez, i only bought a half yard of each, and it is really going the distance. i am thinking that i will make a tote bag with the crayon case sewn on, for emma to take when she goes to church with daddy.

tie one on!

there's another swap going on, and it's the sassy apron swap. actually, there will be four swaps this year. the spring swap deadline to sign up is january 20 - you better hurry! (that's a lot of swaps in one paragraph)

next up on the craft to do list...

finish the 4 pairs of pajama capris i found in my fabric stash! these were started at least 5 years ago - they barely fit now, but i think i've figured out what to do to fix that. i am going to lengthen the waist - these were below the belly style and as i've gotten older(fatter) i'm not such a fan of the lowrider look. i remember i was making them for christmas presents, ha! anyways, they are basically all done except for the hems and waistband. i had even ironed the hems and pinked all the edges. the fabrics are not really in style anymore, but since they will just get cereal bar wiped on them and spit up down the leg, does it really matter?

cross off alex's fleece nemo blanket - i finished it yesterday!

one little drink can't hurt, right?

i just made my first batch of homemade liquor - amaretto, actually. it's so simple and wow, does it taste good. too sweet, really, but i think it will be tasty for amaretto sours. the recipe is from marjory at and now i need to think of a good reason not to drink some at 2:06 pm while the kids are napping...

1 c. water
1 c. white sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
2 c. vodka
2 Tb. almond extract
2 tsp. vanilla extract

mix first three ingredients in a saucepan. heat until boiling and sugars are dissolved. remove from heat and cool ten minutes. stir remaining ingredients into sugar mixture. store in a sealed bottle. (i used a sparkling water bottle)

alexander calder would be proud

feeling creative? check out this swap! i am so excited, as i've been planning a mobile for a few months now, just waiting for the right inspiration to get started. and here it is! there are tons of examples on the web right now, made from felt, knitted shapes, fabric, wood - you name it. i've been thinking of something made in felt, embroidered, possibly some beads...i'll post a pic when i'm done!

have a ball

you may have the idea from my previous posts that i am one of those moms who think about nothing but their kids' birthday parties - yes, i love planning and throwing them, but now i am done until fall! on to new crafty adventures!

like sewing! i scored a $20 brother machine off craigslist a few months back, and i am finally dusting it off and working on a few things. i've been easing into this sewing thing - it's been awhile - hemming curtains and mending. but i finally found the perfect beginner project while on sew, mama, sew the other day.

aren't these adorable? i am making them for my kids and also for a few baby gifts i needed this month. i grabbed some bright cotton & cute flannel material at the wallyworld yesterday, and i can't wait to get started. i actually got 2 made yesterday, and emj has been carrying hers around ever since.

i'm thinking of some felt buttons for the ends, to hide my uneven seam matching, and in emj's i put a few small jingle bells that rattle when you shake it. i also thought some embroidery along the seams would be cute. they are so fast to make, i have a feeling they will be my go-to baby shower gifts from now on. i mean, i love to knit, but it takes time, people! and for a baby? really? when they outgrow it in the time it takes to blink?

observe the skilz

i had the best surprise the other day! i logged onto cake central and under their scrolling "all time popular cake photos" was one of MY cakes!!! it was so cool to see my cake in lights. and, it gave me more confidence for a cake that i am making for our son's birthday tomorrow.
