snowed in!

with all the kids home for spring break, it's been busy! we tried to make it a fun week for the kids, with play dates, soccer games, movies, and sleepovers. we even visited a 4H petting zoo!  they had baby goats and pigs, so adorable! it got me thinking about getting baby chicks...

zach is doing great at soccer, and i love watching those prek - kgtn kids run around and fall down :)  sawyer's kind of a handful at the games, so i was glad it fell on troy's day off this week! nice to have an extra set of hands.

i am not used to that much activity in one week, so i'm looking forward to a quiet day at home today.   good thing, because we got a bunch more snow and the roads are closed.

i did manage to finish up a couple of random items that have been taking up space on my table.

my sweet friend patty gave me some of her quiltcon swag, including this printed calendar from spoonflower. i decided to bind it with some aqua gingham, and used some command strips to tack it to the cabinets in the kitchen! i'd been looking for something fun for that spot!  and seriously, what did we do before those command strips? they are amazing. i did the binding by machine, it goes so fast that way. (and it's not as crooked as it looks in that photo, must be the angle.)

then i stitched up these nursery rhyme panel books. these have been in my stash for several years, i made two and then forgot about the others. i'm sending one to my niece and gave one to sawyer. emma reads to him every night at bedtime, it just melts my heart.

i got another scrappy trip block done, and i've got just one more to do before i call it good and start stitching them together. pics to come!

charm madness

I love fabric charms. I love swapping them, I love sewing with them, and I love tutorials for fun new ideas! Have you heard about the Charm Madness blog hop? It started on Monday so I'm a few days behind, but with the kids on spring break we've had a busy week!

Charm Madness at Sew Lux Fabric

There are weekly giveaway drawings at the Sew Lux blog. You can link up your own charm projects between 3/23 to 4/6. And then enter the Grand Prize giveaway April 7th and 8th by counting up how many charms used in all of the blog hop tutorials.  She's even included a chart to help you track :) Lots of stuff to do and prizes to win!

And you also get an automatic 10% off all charm packs and mini charm packs at Sew Lux Fabrics but hurry! It ends 3/22!

And, a somewhat related topic.  I recently participated in an Amy Butler charm swap, and an Anna Maria Horner charm swap.  Which led me to thinking, why not a Denyse Schmidt charm swap? Is this something you'd be interested in? I'm planning it out right now, so look for more details, or leave me a comment if you want in!

And again, somewhat related: I mentioned hosting a rainbow swap again. I have put that on hold for now, but you can join in the KC Rainbow layer cake swap! We need a few more people so if you'd be interested, go sign up at the flickr group! You'd need two, 1 1/2 yard cuts of fabrics, in two assigned colors.  They need to be quality quilting cotton, no Joann's or Walmart stuff. You'll cut them into 10" squares, mail them with a SASE to my friend Nikki, and get back a rainbow of layer cake squares! Check it out or send me a msg if you have questions!

the boardwalk skirt

i recently had the chance to test the boardwalk skirt pattern for andrea of GoTo Patterns. it's part of the sun & surf collection at pattern anthology. it's now available for a limited time, along with some other really cute designs!

i made this for my daughter emma. i used the size eight pattern, and it fits well. she will probably be wearing this a lot this spring!

i love that this pattern goes from 6 months all the way to 14 years.

it was a fun skirt to make. i will definitely make another, in better fabrics. we had a very short window for testing, and it was during the time i was snowed in for several days! i just used some random fabrics from my stash. the outer skirt is a lightweight yellow and pink stripe, and the underskirt is a floral quilting cotton. i fancied up my ruffle with crocheted lace on top of the cotton ruffle.  so emma got a new skirt and i used up two fabrics from my stash! win win!
